Humphree’s
sea chest inlets are similar to flush-type waterjet inlets,
although much different in shape. That the shape of sea chest
inlets should be similar to those of waterjet inlets is a wide-spread
misconception that has caused exasperation to operators and
owners of high-speed vessels. In contrast to waterjet inlets,
sea chest inlets usually operate with a much smaller inlet-velocity
ratio and therefore call for completely different geometry.
